Honor Moore was born on May, 28, 1923 and died May 29, 2013 aged ninety years of age. Born Honor Getty in Newtownards, Co. Down, she studied at the Cookstown Agricultural College with a view to teaching home economics. In 1947 she married Sam Edgar and they went on to have seven children. At the start of their married life Sam was a reporter on the Newtownards Chronicle and Honor was writing cookery columns for the Belfast Newsletter. They subsequently moved to Dublin when Sam got an offer to work in the Irish Times. He then went on to establish a successful public relations agency but sadly, died very suddenly in 1965 leaving Honor with a young family to rear. Honor continued to manage the agency and write cookery columns for the rest of her working life.

In 1990 together with Theodora Fitzgibbon, she founded the Irish Food Writers’ Guild and occupied the position of President from 1991-2013. The Guild promotes high standards for food writing and was an early champion of the artisan food concept and increased quality in food production. In 2005 she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Euro Toque Community of Chefs organisation. She also made a number of TV appearances more particularly on the Late, Late Show, a Saturday night chat show on Irish television.
Honor was a life-long champion of good food, healthy ingredients and polished presentation and has been described as the doyenne of Irish food writers. She was interested in new ideas and ingredients and was always supportive to young chefs, restaurateurs and food producers. After her death her family donated her large collection of cookbooks to the library of the Dublin Institute of Technology at Cathal Brugha Street (the location of the Catering College). This comprehensive collection established over a lifetime demonstrates her interest in food both from Ireland and all over the world. Honor was working on her biography entitled “A Cook’s Life” when she died. Extracts and recipes from the book are included here.
